To celebrate the winter yum-cha sessions Fitzroy’s own Rice Paper Scissors invited down a bunch of local Melbourne foodies to it’s quaintly intricate space to enjoy a meal together and to try first hand why this acclaimed restaurant is raved about. Now for those of you who know me well you’ll know I am a vegan but that has never stopped me from telling you guys all about the great eats around the place, and certainly won’t this time as I was lucky enough to be joined by a friend who ate whatever I couldn’t to give e the inside scoop!
Traditionally yum-cha is a banquet style meal that you share with a bunch of friends, the tapas of the east, and this is no different 10-12 meals that help you sample a bit of the culture in every bite. The theme for the day was “cool story bro” and it was as recipes from the wildly heralded restaurants new self-titled book were made for each table to sample. With 12 mouthwatering options to come including pork, duck, seafood and a range of chicken, not to mention the sweet desserts, the table seemed excited to try each of the dishes and fully immerse itself in the delicacies.
As meal after meal came out I watched and listened intently to what the reaction was and I have to say from the smiles on their faces to the way each person licked their fingers, and plates, I could tell that they were thoroughly enjoying the food. As we discussed each meal, and I chowed down my mixed salad, I learnt a thing or two about how to make sure we could get the desired effect at home, as described in the book.
After finishing the courses and the yummy dessert I asked each person at the table what their favourite part was and too my surprise each person had a different dish, and for a different reason which told me that their truly was something for everyone! You can try all the tasty meals for yourself as the winter edition of yum-cha lives on at Rice Paper Scissors from just $55 for 10-12 melas and while you’re their treat yourself to a cocktail for me! You can also pick up their self-titled recipe book inshore or online, I was lucky enough to take one home with me and my family has thanked me for it since!v
